The Frontier Model Forum (FMF) is an industry-supported non-profit dedicated to advancing frontier AI safety and security. We work closely with experts from our member firms to identify emerging risk management practices, support scientific research and methods, and facilitate information-sharing for frontier AI vulnerabilities, threats and concerning capabilities.

We are seeking a Director of Programs to supervise our core workstreams and programs. As Director of Programs, you will be responsible for overseeing regular internal expert workshops and ensuring the development of high-quality, scientifically-informed publications across our research portfolio, including our workstreams on frontier AI frameworks, advanced cybersecurity and model security threats, and chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear (CBRN) risks.

The ideal candidate will be adept at fostering collaboration, identifying consensus across diverse viewpoints and perspectives, and overseeing multiple lines of effort simultaneously. This will include organizing and leading workshops with domain experts from our member firms, overseeing the drafting, revising, and publication of best practice guidelines and issue briefs, and managing key stakeholder relationships.

What You’ll Do

Research & Editorial Oversight

  • Inform and ensure rigorous technical and editorial standards for relevant FMF publications and public resources
  • Develop editorial workflows and timelines for multi-stakeholder collaborative documents
  • Ensure technical depth, accuracy, clarity and accessibility in publications to meet the needs of both technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Coordinate multiple rounds of review processes with internal and external subject matter experts
  • Maintain consistency in terminology and framing across workstream outputs
  • Monitor AI alignment literature, staying current on capabilities evaluations, risk assessments, and interpretability

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Cultivate relationships with external academic, researchers and practitioners in relevant technical domains
  • Develop and manage regular touchpoints with member firm research teams to identify emerging safety practices and gaps 

Program Management

  • Oversee the development and publication of issue briefs and technical reports across Frontier AI Frameworks, AI-Bio, AI-Nuclear, AI-Cyber, and AI Security workstreams
  • Manage and oversee research staff, providing direct mentorship and performance feedback
  • Organize and lead workshops, ongoing working groups, and other research initiatives
  • Evaluate workstream and workshop success against strategic goals

Strategic Leadership

  • Act as a thought partner to FMF leadership, shaping key workstream strategies and priorities
  • Design and execute AI security workstreams, developing workshops and outputs in line with FMF strategy
  • Communicate FMF viewpoints and strategy to external stakeholders and partners
  • Identify opportunities to develop best practices, guidelines, and other public resources

About You

You may be a good fit for Director of Programs if you:

  • Have significant experience in program management and driving forward collaborative projects
  • Have strong writing and editorial skills, especially drafting, revising, and finalizing collaborative research documents.
  • Have a clear track record of managing collaborative writing projects from conception to publication
  • Have strong communication skills, both written and verbal, and an ability to develop constructive relationships with key partners and stakeholders
  • Thrive at organizing, facilitating, and synthesizing expert workshops and research convenings 
  • Have experience managing teams and supporting leadership in fast-paced and constantly changing environments

You may be a strong candidate if you:

  • Have extensive professional experience working on AI security, policy and/or governance 
  • Have prior experience researching, developing or implementing AI risk management and assessment practices
  • Have an advanced degree in computer science, STEM fields, or relevant social science
